What is Musculoskeletal Podiatry?

Our clinic is well known for its deep understanding of musculoskeletal podiatry, providing expert care that goes beyond routine treatment. We work closely with local surgeons, physiotherapists, and osteopaths to ensure patients receive the most comprehensive support possible.

One of our key areas of expertise is musculoskeletal and biomechanics assessment. This involves a gait analysis and detailed clinical examination of the lower limb to evaluate the range and quality of movement in your joints and muscles. The foot alignment, the type of shoes, an abnormality in joints or muscles or even just growing, could also be responsible for problems higher up the body in the knees, hips or back.

Such assessments are valuable for patients of all ages, whether managing pain, recovering from injury, or seeking to improve mobility and performance.

By identifying underlying mechanical or structural issues, we can create tailored treatment plans that may include specialist insoles (orthoses), footwear recommendations, targeted exercises, and collaborative care with other health professionals. Our aim is always to reduce pain, improve function, and help you move with greater comfort and confidence.

Musculoskeletal Podiatry Appointment

A Musculoskeletal podiatry appointment begins with taking a full medical history and making a detailed assessment of how your feet and lower limbs are working, helping us understand how this may be contributing to your symptoms.

We use advanced tools such as the Tekscan pressure mat, which provides precise information about how your feet load and move during standing and walking. This gait analysis data, combined with your clinical assessment, allows us to create a personalised treatment plan.

Where appropriate, we may prescribe therapeutic orthotic insoles or adapt your existing footwear. Insoles can often be heat-moulded on the day to provide immediate comfort and support, or your feet can be scanned using a 3D camera. These scans are sent to a specialist lab where your fully bespoke orthotics are 3D-printed using the latest technology.

We also provide footwear advice, from everyday trainers to specialist shoes such as YDA, DB Shoes and Cosyfeet, ensuring your footwear supports your foot health. For more complex needs, including severe conditions such as cerebral palsy, we can arrange fully bespoke footwear in partnership with providers like Nimco.

Finally, you will be given a personalised exercise programme with specific strengthening and stretching routines to support long-term improvement.
